Question: Kind of weird hockey apparel/knowledge questions?
(Posted by: Rinnegan4life on 2010-11-11 16:41:54)
When is it socially acceptable to really buy a jersey. Like if you become a fan of a team and two weeks later buy a jersey, that's a little, you know. I was thinking of getting an away Datsyuk jersey for Christmas, just a weird question I was wondering about. Another question is this, do you have to play hockey in order to know it. Sometimes when I'm talking to my friends about hockey, I hear the comment, "You don't play hockey so therefore you don't know it. " |

Hey as long as you enjoy the game it really doesnt matter how LONG youve been a fan ;-) And as for having to "play hockey in order to know it " I DO say that it helps to maybe understand the game a bit better but I really dont think that makes you a better fan Remember there are some NHL coaches that have little NHL playing experience (think Donald S Cherry) - does that make them any less knowledgeable about the game at that level? The more you watch, the more you'll "know " Just enjoy the game! |

It's not weird, some people will make you feel stupid for it. However it really is up to you. If you want a jersey, go for it! Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. BQ: When your friends say that, bring up that tons of reporters don't play hockey, and yet their careers are based on it. |

No, its not weird to buy a jersey if you are a fan of the sport. I am a huge hockey fan (never played the game) and own 3 or 4 jerseys. I can't recommend buying a Red Wings jersey (cause I am a Blackhawks fan) but you don't have to play a sport to know about it you just have to have a passion for it and the desire to cheer for your team. I say GO FOR IT!!!! |

You can buy a Jersey any time you want. As much as they cost, you should buy the Jerseys you like, when you like. It was only 7 years ago, that you usually paid about $149.99. The Jerseys I have bought in the last couple of seasons have all been $199.99. I expect that The 2011 NHL Winter Classic Jerseys will run even more. If you paid enough attention to the action that's going on and appreciate the nuances of the game, I don't think you necessarily have to have payed hockey to know hockey, but playing hockey does give you a better feel, understanding and appreciation for the game. |

I don't think you should mostly base your decision on people opinion. You do it for you and because you like something, not for others. Some people wear sport teams caps or clothing and they're not even fans of the team. I agree that buying a jersey after only two weeks is a short period of time, but if you become passionated about it, have the money, you should go for it. But you have to make a kind of commitment, because a jersey is a expensive and important investment (for a replica, not less than $130), so think about it twice. It would be a great Christmas present, and if you like it, then buy it! No, I know a lot of fans who are not hockey players. They just love the game and their team. But I would say it helps a lot understanding hockey more is you play it, but it's not a must. Not playing hockey doesn't make you an inferior or lesser fan. Sorry your friends comments are far from being thoughtful and they are wrong. You could even know more than them. They are underestimating you because you don't play hockey and they consider that you're less knowledgeable than them. But don't listen to them. However, I'm sure there are things almost only hockey players know. Like unwritten rules, superstitions, vocabulary, habits, teams routine, etc.....things you learn with experience and from playing that great sport! |
